B.U.R.I.C.K. - Build, Upgrade & Repair Integrated Circuit Komputers

Steve Johnson

Watch out Geek Squad!  This is a crash course in computer hardware—how basic parts come together to create the computer system.  We will learn how to troubleshoot problems in various subsystems of the computer—memory, storage, cabling, etc.  As a capstone event, each student will configure and build a system of their own.  The building of the computer will be a two part “exam”.  First, the student will evaluate necessary components available from a local distributor.  An order will then be placed for the needed parts (provided at cost through Mars Hill Data Solutions).  The second aspect of the exam is the building and configuration of the system.    We will start from the basics and progress (rather quickly) to a higher level of understanding of the hardware that makes up the computer systems that we all use.  This class is for those interested in computers and provides knowledge that can be ‘profitable’ as others realize you’re now proficient troubleshooting and repair!  A background in computer hardware is NOT required.  Note:  This class includes the designing and building of a computer that the student will take home at the end of the class.  Due to the many variations possible in the design and building of the computer, the cost of the computer itself will be a separate (additional) charge from the class fee.

Course requirements/prerequisites: none

Open to Grades: 9-12

Fee:  $150 (plus cost of computer)
