Real Life - Living On Your Own

Erica Rinde

In this course, you will look at some practical life skills for after graduation.   By utilizing mock checkbooks, paychecks and bills, we will see who goes broke and who has enough to buy goods at the end of the week.  You will learn how to balance your checkbook, how to prepare a simple budget and how to live within a budget.    We will explore banking options, interest, credit cards, fees, and student loans.  We will explore what it would cost to live on your own, managing your bills, and resolve disputes.  We will evaluate basic living costs, transportation costs, housing, and everything else.  We will discuss ways to save money when living on your own.  We will evaluate grocery prices, comparing stores via a field trip, and then prepare a simple meal with our purchases.  We will discuss job applications, job interviews and review techniques by practicing mock interviews during class.  If time allows we will cover other areas of interest based on student input.
